WEEE: EC would incentivise Member States to increase collection by new tax

In its proposal for the 2028–2034 EU budget (Multiannual Financial Framework), the European Commission is proposing a new own resource based on non-collected e-waste through the application of a uniform rate to the weight of non-collected e-waste.

The contribution of Member States to the EU budget would result from the application of a call rate of 2€/kg, annually adjusted for inflation, to the weight of non-collected e-waste. It is expected to generate around €15.0 billion annually, on average.

The Commission’s proposal still has to be adopted by the European Parliament and the Council. Industry federations of the affected sectors are in the process of evaluating the proposal and coming up with their position on the matter.
